01 Oct 2014 - Polar bears, Islets and Fjords
A voyage with Hurtigruten "M/S Fram"
A 1,800 nautical miles long sailing with expedition cruise ship M/S Fram from Longyearbyen on Svalbard in the north - 78 degrees - to Bergen in the south - 62 degrees. I am so lucky that I got the opportunity be part of the ship's "Ekspedition Team".
There are no words that can describe my feelings. The joy of being able to experience nature's treasures, do something you enjoy so intensely and contribute to creating memorable guest experiences is just simply overwhelming.
Enjoy my moments.

12 July 2014 - Svalbardian dessert
I had to return to the Arctic, to the island of the Midnight Sun, to experience the summer at 78 degrees north, to take some beers with my new friends, and to collect the rest of my equipment left here at 1,300 kilometers from the North Pole. I enjoyed a week-long 'Svalbardian dessert', topped with a boat trip to Pyramiden.

14 June 2014 - Thank you Svalbard!
My year on Svalbard has come to an end and I can now call myself an Arctic Nature Guide! New adventures are awaitening, and I am sure some of them will be on Svalbard.
In this post I shared a video with a summary of this unforgettable year in the Arctic.

13 June 2014 - Summer ski trip
The Arctic Nature Guide-course last trip: summer skiing with 20 friends and family members in 'the home of the Trolls'. The final test for 20 soon freshly baked guides. A trip that required more organization and involvement than any other trip we have been on. 100% prepared, zero error margins. A wonderful journey through white-out and blue ice glacier crevasses.

18 May 2014 - Last snowmobile trip
One month of midnight sun and counting! Spring has finally arrived on Svalbard. We are enjoying long, hot (0 degrees) days. Enjoy some pictures from the beautiful east coast of Spitsbergen during my very last snowmobile trip.

11 May 2014 - Trollheimen ski expedition
Back from a fantastic 6 day glacier ski expedition with 10 lovely Norwegian guests. It has been a joy to guide them through magic Trollheimen ('home of the Trolls).

30 April 2014 - Noorderlicht
This week, I was so fortunate to visit the beautiful two-masted schooner 'Noorderlicht' and here lovily Dutch crew. I will definately spend more time on this ship!

20 April 2014 - Svalbard Easter
I have spent the holidays guiding in all directions at all hours with a wide range of interesting guests. In particular, there are three unique ‘attractions’ that I would like to share with you. Partly because they made my guests gaze in awe, partly because they made me fall in love with this far corner of the world. Join and enjoy these wonders of nature: polar bears, glaciers and the midnight sun:

12 April 2014 - Magic evening moments
In just a week the sun will shine 24 hours a day. Svalbard is a paradise of light and we are enjoying magical evening moments telling us spring is on its way. I feel priviledged to be able to share these moments with you.

9 April 2014 - Svalbard seen through the eyes of guests
Last week, Jesper and Maarten came all the way from Australia and The Netherlands, giving me the opportunity to share some of the finest Svalbard has to offer.

|
3 April 2014 - Skiing the Arctic cold
Finally news from the high Arctic, where it has been really cold lately. Skiing and camping in -20 to -30 degrees Celsius has been challenging, but extremely instructive for the Arctic Nature Guide students.
A photo and video impression from our 8-day ski expedition.

9 March 2014 - Private guiding
Last week, I was blessed with a visit from my girlfriend. For five days, I tried to be a good private guide, offering a memorable 'Svalbard in a nutshell'-experience including dog sledding, ice caving and an overnight snowmobile safari to Barentsburg.

|
3 March 2014 - Snowmobile guiding
I started working as a snowmobile guide, as part of my Arctic Nature Guide practice placement. Already on my first day I was extremely lucky, seeing the sun for the first time since October, and spotting my first polar bear!!

|
1 March - First ski expedition
A fresh report about our first ski expedition, learning about skiing with a pulk, winter camp routines, snowcave digging, glacier travel and companion rescue, GPS navigation, avalanche risk and routefinding.
Our basecamp was lightened up by northern lights and the first glimpse of the returning sun.

|
18 February 2014 - Polar bear tracks
Having bought a snowmobile, the East Coast of Spitsbergen called for a visit. It turned out to be an exciting trip, with an overnight in a small cabin surrounded by fresh polar bear tracks.

13 February 2014 - Avalanche course
Yesterday, it rained in the Arctic, and temperatures reached 5 pluss degrees. January has been 14 (!!) degrees warmer than normal. We should learn to adapt to a changing environment.
In preparation for our 8-day ski expedition next week, we practiced an avalanche rescue operation.
|
|
8 February 2014 - Sea ice rescue training
The fjords are freezing, turning into natural ice plains, which can be used as travel and transportation routes, on ski's or with snow mobiles. But can the ice be trusted?
This week, the Arctic Nature Guide students practiced on a rescue operation on sea ice.

3 February 2014 - Our first attack
Forceful winds destroyed the almost 2 meter high leewalls we had build to protect our tent camp against the worst gusts.

26 January 2014 - Guiding under the mother of pearl clouds
My first trip as a guide for real guests (!!) became a magic trip under 'the mother of pearl' clouds. A rewarding experience that just wants me to have more of the good stuff.

22 January 2014 - Home is where the tent is
After a week on Svalbard, things are getting quite settled in our tent. It's a weird life, under weird conditions. So, not so weird that I love it.

|
16 January 2014 - Back on Svalbard
Back on Svalbard, where the Polar Night has painted the sky pitch dark. The first pictures of our tent and home for the next 5 months.
